From darkness, through twilight, to a spectacular sunrise at 2132 metres above sea level. The guided hike starts at midnight so that you reach the "front row" on time. A breakfast on Pilatus Kulm rounds off this extraordinary start to the day.

The hiking route
Alpnachstad valley station - Ämsigen - Chilchsteine - Pilatus Kulm - Esel

1,680 metres ascent; 25 metres descent; total 9 km
Hiking time: approx. 5 hours

This hike requires a very good level of fitness and surefootedness.

Start / Arrival
01:00 AM: meeting point at the valley station in Alpnachstad (in the night from saturday to sunday)
01:10 AM: start hike
06:20 AM: estimated arrival on Mt Pilatus
06:46 AM: sunrise
8:09 AM or later: descent to Alpnachstad by cogwheel train

Bring along

• Headlamp (no hand-flashlight)
• Sturdy hiking boots with a good grip sole (no trainers/sneakers)
• Snacks for on the way
• Sufficient liquid/water
• Warm drink in thermos flask
• Rain, sun and cold protection
• A change of outerwear
• Trekking poles if required
