Not Blue: Experimental Cyanotype Workshop with Dimakatso Mathopa

Samedi, 04/07/2026 09:00
In the context of the exhibition "A Kind of Paradise – Colonial-Era Photography in Contemporary Art"

Think cyanotype, but different: In her artistic practice, Dimakatso Mathopa experiments with alternative photographic processes and alchemy, creating unusual images using bleach, wine, black tea, and her own self-image. In this workshop, the artist shares her knowledge. One thing is certain: the unmistakable blue typical of cyanotypes will be nowhere to be found.

Dimakatso Mathopa (b. 1995, South Africa)
lives and works in Johannesburg. Her journey into printmaking began with a fascination for techniques like Van Dyke Brown and silkscreen, which led to her exploration of cyanotype printing—a historical photographic process known for its striking cyan-blue monochrome prints. She has since expanded her practice to include monotypes and experiments with acetate mediums. Mathopa, laureate of the Elaine Harris Photo Grant 2024, has exhibited at events such as the African Photo Biennial (Spain), Photo Vogue Festival (Milan), Paris Photo, ARCO Madrid, and AKAA (Also Known as Africa) contemporary art and design fair. Her work features in major European and US collections and was showcased in Inner Spirits and Outer Landscapes (2024/25) with the Forward Art Stories (FAS) Collection in Lisbon, Portugal.
