Warmi Guaysupina: Perspectives from Indigenous Women
Sonntag, 08.11.2026 14:00 Uhr
In the context of the exhibition “Amazonian Legacies – Art and Archaeology”
Female voices are highly present in indigenous societies in the Amazon. Women actively participate in their communities' assemblies, shape decisions, and engage in social and environmental causes. Many of the most significant activists for the protection of the Amazon region are Indigenous women.
In Ecuadorian Amazonia, the Guaysupina—the shared drinking of Guayusa tea—is a daily tradition. This gathering takes place as the Warmi Guaysupina. "Warmi" means "woman" in Kichwa and refers here to a Guaysupina dedicated to women, creating space for exchange among women.
Together with our female guests from the Nación Originaria Quijos in Ecuador and the Huitoto community from Araracuara in Colombia, we share Guayusa tea and discuss their experiences and perspectives.
