From Vienna to ParisMax Bruch: Nos. 1-4 from 8 pieces op. 83
for violin, viola, piano
Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Quintet in E flat major op. 16
for piano, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon
Gabriel Fauré: Piano Quartet in C minor op. 15
for violin, viola, cello and piano
Three great European cultural metropolises are at the centre of the first concert: In Vienna in 1797, Beethoven launched his brilliant Quintet in E flat major op. 16 and, like Mozart 13 years earlier with his quintet for the same instrumentation, benefited from the excellent standard of wind instruments in Vienna at the time. In his late Berlin years, Max Bruch originally composed his beautiful Pieces op. 83 for clarinet, viola and piano in 1908, but at the same time also published an alternative version for violin instead of clarinet. Fauré's Piano Quartet op. 15 from 1879 takes us to Paris at the end, which helped to emancipate French chamber music from the then dominant German models in an impressive manner.
