The impressive mountain landscape of the Bernese Oberland inspired Brahms to compose numerous masterpieces during his summer holidays on Lake Thun, such as the Piano Trio op. 101. Brahms also repeatedly met his old friend Widmann in Bern, who in turn had performed the wedding of the composer Hermann Goetz and Laura Wirth in Winterthur a few years earlier. Goetz's touching Piano Quintet op. 16 from 1874 is his last chamber music work before his all too early death in Zurich 150 years ago. The other two works were commissioned by two wealthy patrons: an American of Irish descent ordered a "Trio sur des mélodies populaires irlandaises" from the Geneva composer Frank Martin and the English banker and amateur cellist David Salomons ordered the operatic Duetto for cello and double bass from Rossini.
