Gran SestettoGioacchino Rossini: Sonata a Quattro No. 1 in G major
for flute quartet
Paul Juon: Divertimento op. 51
for wind quintet and piano
Jacques Ibert: Pièces brèves
for wind quintet
Mikhail Glinka: Gran Sestetto Originale in E flat major
for piano and strings
As a framework, two opera composers are guests in the chamber music: The young Glinka created his "Gran Sestetto" for piano and strings during his years in Milan, when he was an almost daily visitor to La Scala and became friends with Bellini, the master of bel canto. The Italian influence is unmistakable in this virtuoso chamber music work. Rossini, on the other hand, only devoted himself to instrumental music in his late Parisian years. The cheerful Flute Quartet in G major is one of a series of four works for the same instrumentation, which he arranged in Paris after his own "6 Sonate a quattro" composed in 1804. The "Trois Pièces Brèves" for wind quintet by Jacques Ibert and the Divertimento op. 51 for wind quintet and piano by Paul Juon are also characterised by lightness and joyful playing.
