In the first half of the 19th century, Switzerland, with its unspoilt countryside and majestic mountains, was increasingly discovered as a tourist destination. This trend was also fuelled by many painters and artists, who captured their diverse impressions on paper and canvas. These ‘views’ were published in travel literature and, alongside travelogues, in illustrated magazines. Weesen and Amden, situated on an important and well-travelled route where travellers switched from land to water, made a deep impression on visitors thanks to their location on the wild and romantic Lake Walen, set against a rugged mountain backdrop. The extensive collection of engravings of Weesen and Amden is not only of interest to the region’s inhabitants, but also serves as a historical document illustrating the ongoing development of the landscape.
